Texas Freetail Bat: Appearance, biology, life cycle, habitat, diet, behavior
Texas free-tail bats fall into the category of mammals and are found abundantly in North America where there is a huge population of such animals. This is considered as a special species of North America as its population is on the decline at a very fast pace and its existence is becoming lesser with time.
They are usually dark in color and have a very blackish shade color appearance. They are usually 9 cm long, and both males and females have the same body length. However, when it comes to weight, the females have slightly more weight as compared to males for the reason they have fat on their bodies which is meant for gestation and nursing. The name “free tail” comes from the length of the tail which is half as the body’s length. Their ears are wide, rounded, and large compared to their head, nearly meeting at the front of the face and their ears help them find the location and other nearby animals using echolocation. These animals possess canines which are the characteristics of both the genders. However, males have usually longer canines as compared to females. Their fur color ranges from dark grey to brown, and it is the same in both males and females.
Biology & Lifecycle
Both males and females mate in the maternity roosts which are found in the large caves. These caves are the best place for them to mate and start the breeding process. The maturity period for males and females is different. Females become mature at the age of nine months while males usually become mature at the age of 2 years. In their reproduction time, males usually control females from mating with other males and control their movements. The young ones are born in 11-12 weeks, and females recognize their offspring with the special scent that is associated with them with the vocalizations. The mother imprints her scent on the young ones in the early period of their life.
These animals are insectivorous. They hunt their prey using echolocation and usually feed upon moths, beetles, dragonflies and other insects. They are known for their flight skills and can catch their prey during their flight. They consume a significant number of insects, and they feed upon the migrating insects.
Habitat & Behavior
Their habitat is usually caved where there is sufficient dark environment to stay, and they come out of their hideouts in the nights as they belong to the nocturnal family of animals where they can hardly see in the daylight. Also, they are found in the tree holes where they settle and appear on the scene after dusk. They are known for their fast flight and have traveled at the a ground speed of 160 km/h.
